F2 Fault Code And How to Fix It (4 Common Causes)

The F2 fault code on an Ideal Boiler is possibly the most common code that customers experience. Below is an overview of what the fault code means and how it can be fixed.

What does F2 mean on a boiler?

The F2 fault code means that the flame has gone out while using the heating or hot water. This is different to the L2 code (see below).

There are four common causes for the F2 error code. The first, and most likely is that there’s an issue with the gas valve. It could be that the valve is stuck and it won’t rotate; resulting in a lack of gas being provided to the pilot jet (and no gas means no chance of the pilot jet re-lighting the flame that has gone out).

In this case, a boiler engineer is needed to fix or replace the valve.

Other causes for the F2 fault code include low gas pressure, a faulty fan or issues with your flue. In all of these situations, boiler repairs might be needed and a boiler engineer should be called.

If the issue is related to gas pressure then other gas devices in your home might not be working properly. During the colder winter months, the issue could, however, be that the regulator in the gas meter has frozen.

L2 Fault Code And How To Fix It

The L2 fault code on an Ideal Boiler is similar to the F2 code in that there is an issue related to the boiler being lit. Below is an overview of what the L2 fault code means and how to fix it.

What does L2 mean on a boiler?

The L2 code on an Ideal Boiler means that something is causing the boiler flame to go out. This is different to the F2 code with means that the flame won’t re-ignite.

There are various reasons why the flame won’t re-ignite and one of the main causes is a gas supply issue. This will possibly mean that your boiler needs to be taken apart by a certified boiler engineer to fix the issue.
