Top tips for your next gas appliance installation
When installing a gas appliance, there are plenty of things to think about. In this article, we discuss some top tips for a successful gas appliance installation and for maintaining your appliance.
Select your appliance and environment
Choosing the right appliance is key, but it’s also important to take other factors into account such as where it will go, what issues might arise and so on.
Issues include how easily accessible is the gas supply, will it fit where you want to place it and are there other factors such as cables that need to be considered.
If you are unsure about issues such as accessing the gas supply then contact a Gas Safe registered gas engineer.
Only use a certified Gas Safe installer
A gas appliance installation must be done properly in order for it to be safe, legal and working properly. If you are buying a new fire then make sure to contact a gas fire installer who can advise on the best products available and can safely install the fire for you.
Make sure to check if the company is qualified to do the work.
Ensure you get the correct certification
Any work that’s carried out should include a homeowner gas safety certificate once the work is completed. If your installer isn’t able to provide this then they are breaking the law, and your installation might not be safe.
Before taking on an installer, ask if they provide a gas safety certificate. If you are a landlord then a gas landlord safety certificate is required.
Have gas appliances checked regularly
Gas appliances should be checked regularly by a gas engineer to ensure they are working properly. If anything is wrong, they will notify you immediately and you might need to have someone undertake gas leak repairs or some other form of work.
If you have had a gas fire or gas heating installation then a safety check every 12 months is recommended.
Here are some quick tips for prolonging the life of your new gas appliance:
- Frost and damp protection: Try to keep your appliance away from damp environments. If your gas appliance isn’t used regularly (such as for an office shed or garage) then you might need to protect it from frost during the winter months.
- Keep the gas appliance away from other objects: Sharp and heavy objects can cause damage to gas pipes and appliances while other objects might block the flow of gas. If you have a gas fire, make sure to keep objects well away from the flame area to avoid them catching fire.
- Clean your appliance regularly: This will help avoid tarnishing or rust and keeping away dust from gas flames can also help to create a safer, better environment.
Smell Gas?
If you smell gas and are worried that there is a potential leak, open up your windows immediately. Switch off any electrics and get in touch with a gas engineer.
