Gas boiler installations - What's involved?

Gas boiler installations are the installation of a gas boiler into a property. The gas boiler installation typically involves replacing an old or faulty boiler with a new one.

Any new boiler can be installed onto your existing central heating system in your home. We just need to ensure that the gas supply is fed to the boiler location along with your heating pipes, so that the boiler is able to pump hot water around the home to your radiators. If fitting a combination boiler we would also need to supply hot and cold water feeds to the boiler location.

A new gas boiler installation might also require the replacement of other components on your system such as brand new piping or new thermostatic radiator valves to increase the energy efficiency within your home.

A gas boiler installations should be done by a qualified gas boiler engineer, and should not be done by a homeowner.

How long does a gas boiler last?

Gas boilers are one of the most common types of heating systems used in residential homes. They are the most efficient and, if looked after, can last a long time.

What’s the best boiler size for you?

There are a couple of key considerations when choosing the right boiler size and type for your home:

How much water do you use?
If you live in a large family home, you’re likely to have higher water usage than a single occupant in a one-bedroom apartment. Generally speaking, conventional or system boilers are better suited to meet higher water demands, and Combi boilers are best for lower usage.

How much space do you have?
If you’re pushed for space in your home, combi boilers are a good option since they don’t require a hot water cylinder.

Where do you want the boiler to live?
For ease of installation and minimal disruption, it’s best to have your new boiler fitted in the same place as the old one. Most people tend to go for kitchens or cupboards, but you can place it in almost any room, as long as it has the correct pipework and you can position the flue correctly.

Oil boiler installations - What's involved?

Under normal circumstances, an oil boiler installation takes around 1 day to complete by one of our oil boiler installers. If you are looking for an oil boiler installation then we will need to review your current set-up first, oil boilers can be sited externally if space is an issue.

An oil boiler installation isn’t much different to a gas boiler installation although the fuel is normally stored onsite whereas gas is piped in as required.

You cannot install an oil boiler yourself unless you are a qualified engineer with the right level of experience. Boiler fitting should be done by a professional, qualified boiler installer.

LPG boiler installations - What's involved?

Similar to oil, LPG boilers require fuel to be stored locally and, while not many properties use LPG fuel, Profix has the skills and expertise for an LPG boiler installation.

LPG boiler installers simply connect the fuel feed to the new boiler as well as to the heating system. Checks need to be carried out to ensure the system is set up correctly and is safe.

How do I know if my boiler needs replacing?

There are many tell-tale signs that your boiler needs to be replaced, and many of these can be identified long before your boiler ceases to work completely.

One of the easiest indicators that a boiler might need to be replaced is repeated breakdowns or leaks. Also high energy bills can be a sign of an inefficient boiler, in these situations you will actually save money in the long run by getting a new boiler.

Are there regulations for new gas boiler installations?

For a new gas boiler, building regulations approval is needed for safety reasons. If, however, you are having an existing boiler replaced then this is unlikely - although it will depend on your circumstances. Having a flue added, for example, means having to meet the latest regulations such as the maximum height of the flue.

What does boiler certified mean?

New boilers or boiler replacements must be certified. A boiler Gas Safe Certificate acts as a confirmation that your boiler was installed by a qualified heating engineer or boiler installer.

When your new boiler is installed by Profix, you should receive your certificate by post within a few days of the installation being complete.
